This pork is so tender...and is so full of flavor! The recipe caught my eye while I was browsing the Southern Plate blog. It had some unusual ingredients. You pour cider vinegar over the roast and cook it 12 hours on low. That sounded well...a bit strange to me. Then you shred it and add brown sugar, hot sauce, and some red pepper flakes. I had to try it. And...it was great!
Southern Style Pulled Pork
{Southern Plate}
5 lb. pork roast
1 T. salt { I used less}
1 tsp. pepper
2 Tbsp. brown sugar { I added a bit more}
1 1/2 c. cider vinegar
1 T. hot sauce { I used a bit less}
1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
Put the roast in the crock pot and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Pour the cider vinegar over and cover. Cook 12 hours on low. Remove pork from crock pot and shred. Take out 2 cups of liquid from the crock pot and add the red pepper flakes, brown sugar, and hot sauce. Return shredded pork to crock pot and pour mixture on top. Stir. Keep warm until ready to serve.
While I liked the pork the way it was, I just had to make some BBQ sauce to pour on top,too. I used my favorite BBQ sauce recipe. The reason why I like this recipe is because it has a bit of liquid smoke in it. I like the sweet smokey flavor!
Favorite BBQ sauce
1 c. ketchup
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/3 c. sugar
1/4 c. honey
1/4 c. molasses
2 tsp. mustard
1 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. liquid smoke
1/8 tsp. pepper
Mix all together and bring to a boil, simmer 10 minutes on low.
I am sure that after cooking it 12 hours it melted in your mouth. I love unusual combinations, can't you tell?

ReplyDeleteThis looks great. I have never made pulled pork before. I bought the meat yesterday and then came home and looked for a recipe and stumbled on this one of yours. The meat is going in the crockpot soon and I can't wait for dinner time. Luckily, all I need is the liquid smoke, so I'll get that later on.
