Is there anything better than coming home after school, running in the door and smelling fresh baked cookies? I don't think so!
I remember many days sitting in the kitchen telling my mom about my day as we shared cookies and milk. She always wore a cotton dress and a gingham apron...red, yellow, green or blue. There was always a smile on her face, and love in her eyes! Here's a photo of an apron like the ones I remember:
I was a lucky kid. My mom didn't have to work as so many mom's do now days, so she was always home. (Actually, a lot of mom's didn't work outside the home back then.....but they sure worked INSIDE the home!)
Mom always had the cookie jar full with the classics. Chocolate chip, ginger snaps, peanut butter, etc. She very seldom made Snicker doodles. I don't remember why. Maybe one of my brothers or sister didn't care for them. But I loved them! So I was always happy when I found them in the jar. This is the recipe she always used.
I love their spicy cinnamon flavor and soft buttery goodness!
Snicker doodles
1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. butter
2 eggs
Cream shortening, butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix well.
2 1/4 c. flour
2 tsp. cream of tarter
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
Mix in dry ingredients. Shape into 1" balls.
1/4 c. sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
Mix sugar and cinnamon. Roll balls in mixture and place on un greased cookie sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes at 400.
they look wonderful!

I always make Snickerdoodles at Christmas, they're so good, I should be making them all year round!
ReplyDeleteI haven't made Snickerdoodles in ages! And my mom had an apron just like that, in pink check. I hadn't thought of it for years. Wish I had some of her aprons now.
ReplyDeleteMy hubbys favorite! I will have to surprise him with a batch!
ReplyDeleteI love snickerdoodles and this will be one to make for my next care package to my daughter.
ReplyDeletei have the same apron! My grandmother made it for me when I ws a teenager. It was back in the '70's, and she had started to make me homemade things for my hope chest. But I was working at a local restaurant and needed an apron. I cut about 2" off the bottom so that it wouldn't be longer than my skirt. I still have it and have passed it on to my daughter who loves aprons and collects them. My Apron looks idential to yours. There is hand stitching on the top and along the pocket.
